It affects both the gums and the jawbone in which the implant is anchored. This inflammation causes gradual bone loss around the implant \u2014 similar to periodontitis around natural teeth.<\/p>\n<p>The most common causes include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inadequate oral hygiene<\/li>\n<li>Smoking<\/li>\n<li>A poorly fitted restoration or crown<\/li>\n<li>Long-term overloading of the implant<\/li>\n<li>Susceptibility to inflammation (e.g. in diabetic patients)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How do you know something is wrong?<\/h2>\n<p>Peri-implantitis progresses painlessly for a long time, which makes it insidious. Warning signs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bleeding gums around the implant<\/li>\n<li>Swelling or redness of the gums<\/li>\n<li>Bad breath<\/li>\n<li>Sensitivity or pressure when biting<\/li>\n<li>Gum recession or an exposed implant thread<\/li>\n<li>Implant mobility (in advanced stages)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How is it treated?<\/h2>\n<p>Treatment depends on the stage of the disease. The earlier it is detected, the greater the chance of saving the implant.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Professional cleaning and decontamination of the implant<\/strong> \u2014 Using ultrasound, specialised instruments, and antibacterial gels, inflammatory deposits are removed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antibiotic therapy<\/strong> \u2014 Locally or systemically, depending on the extent of the inflammation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Surgical treatment<\/strong> \u2014 In advanced cases, surgical debridement of the inflammatory site, bone grafting, or gum surgery may be necessary.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adjustment of the prosthetic work<\/strong> \u2014 If the inflammation is caused by a poorly fitted crown, it needs to be adjusted or replaced.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Prevention is key<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Thorough daily hygiene (including interdental!)<\/li>\n<li>Regular check-ups with your dentist<\/li>\n<li>Dental hygiene every 3\u20136 months<\/li>\n<li>Do not smoke<\/li>\n<li>Follow post-implant placement instructions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: revert; color: initial;\">An implant can serve for decades \u2014 if it is given proper care.
